Wanna go to Norway?
I wanted to comment on something I hear from time to time. Sometimes it comes in the form of a comment and others as a question, but the essence is the same: I´m sure there are lots of girls who wouldn´t mind going to Norway with you/be carefull so you don´t get seduced by a girl that seeks to tag along back to Norway etc.
This misconception seems pretty common and I´m sure its also a usual thought among many of those who don´t say it out loud. Some came when I was with Axana and others have been more general.
The misunderstanding stems from a deep lack of knowledge about the places I´ve been to. I think many people would have problems placing Nicaragua on the map (…2 years ago for those who read this) and even less imagining what a Nicaraguan house looks like, etc.
What is Latin America and what is it not? Latin America is not a war-torn Eastern African country with regular famines. Its a vast continent with enormous natural resources, a troubled history, rural poverty, prospering metropoles and so much more.
I can understand that refugees in Sudan or Somalia seek shelter in a safer place further north. The situation is not comparable to Latin America where there is no war and where people have food on their table. I´m obviously making some generalizations, while some places are as modern as European cities, we don´t have any similar cases to Haiti back on my continent.
Anyway, I´m floating away from my point. There are gold diggers here in Colombia and there were in Nicaragua. Or more precisely, there are gold diggers everywhere. And there are many girls that just seek a kind of life or stability that they think they can find in a gringo or a European without necessarily dreaming about loads of cash. But for every girl that would like to go to Norway, I think there are numerous girls who don´t fancy that at all. Why is that?
I don´t know, there are probably as many answers as people. But just think about yourself. You have a job, its not well paid and your house is not a mansion, but you get along. Would you move to another part of the planet if that meant you would have to sacrifice seeing all your family and friends, with a culture and language you don´t know nor understand - just because your material standard would increase, as the main pro? (There are obviously more sides to it…)
Some would. Many wouldn´t.
You can´t blame people for having little knowledge about the area I have been to, nobody can know everything and most people haven´t had the chance to travel here. So I guess the idea is just that one doesn´t automatically have to assume the worst of people if one really doesn´t have any idea.
Sorry, this wasn´t very well written, but its just something I wanted to comment. Maybe my point could be easier to understand in another form: Imagining that Greenland had a severely higher quality of life than Norway, would you as a Norwegian move there just because someone paid for you?
